PMI Heartland Chapter and Midland University MBA Capstone Program – Results and Lessons Learned

In mid-2017, Midland University’s MBA program announced a mentoring partnership with PMI Heartland Chapter.  Students successfully completed projects by the end of 2017.  This presentation will describe the projects, how PMI Heartland volunteers mentored students, and the lessons learned from this pilot program.

Speakers:

Andrew Sherwood is currently a Project Manager with Mutual of Omaha. In addition to his practitioner experience, Andrew has extensive experience in academia. He is currently the Director of Midland University’s MBA and Project Management Graduate Certificate Programs.  Prior to his work with Mutual of Omaha, he has worked with Lincoln Financial Group and Fidelity and Guaranty Life.  He has also served as an adjunct professor with Peru State College and Southern New Hampshire University.

For the last year, Kirk Nothelfer (PMP, CSM, CSPO) has been your VP of Professional Development.  He recently transitioned from active-duty in order to plant roots here in the Greater Omaha area with his family and is currently the Task Lead for a DoD Joint Test & Evaluation Quick Reaction Test at US Strategic Command.  Kirk served as a United States Marine for over two decades and brings a wealth of experience in engaged leadership/mentorship, project management, strategic planning and change management.  He is also passionate about the “softer” skills and believes fundamentally in the “wisdom of teams” to find and implement the best solutions to problems.

Since Fall 2017, Michelle Huber (MOAM, PMP, ICGB) has been your Director of Advanced Education Series (AES) & Workshops.  She stepped up to volunteer on short notice when our prior Director suddenly needed to move out of the area, and we’re very grateful to have her on our team!  Michelle is an experienced Project Manager, Educator and Coach.  She is thankful for the varied experiences in her professional career, such as implementing an HR system in 16 countries, managing/mentoring a label manufacturer with the implementation of a new customer service tool and standing up a PMO for a successful local non-profit.  Michelle brings over 15 years of experience in project management, change management, process improvement, requirements gathering, training and learning development.

Cathi Smetana is currently an IT Senior Manager, Vice President, with Bank of the West.  She has been with the Bank of the West for over 2 years where she was previously a Senior Project Manager responsible for IHC Corporate Security Risk Projects.  Cathi has over 17 years of technical project management experience in banking, card services, actuarial consulting and payment processing.  Cathi has a BSBA from the University of Iowa and her MBA from University of Nebraska Omaha.  She is also a certified Project Manager Professional and a Certified Scrum Master.
