November 2018 Monthly Luncheon TOPIC: So...THIS is What You are Trying to Say! (1 PDU)

So...this is what you are trying to say! How different communication styles may impact your management ability.

by Pedro Maligo, PhD

This interactive presentation will discuss the role of good intercultural understanding in helping reduce or altogether avoid one of the most common issues in project management: poor communication.  We will use realistic scenarios to prompt conversation about cultural perceptions and attitudes, and how those need to be understood by project managers so that they can develop efficient strategies to convey information to project members from different cultural backgrounds.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe their own preferred communication style and the reasons for it
  • Identify cultural values that impact how different people communicate
  • Develop basic strategies to communicate in culturally effective ways

Speaker Biography:

Pedro Maligo, Ph.D., is dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Doane University, and works out of the institution’s campus in Crete, Nebraska.  In addition to 25+ years working in American colleges and universities both as a faculty member and as an administrator, Pedro has an extensive background as an intercultural communication trainer and consultant, having delivered since the year 2001 more than 500 programs and workshops for U.S. and international companies.  Those training sessions include “living and working” relocation training for individuals moving to or from the U.S., intercultural teambuilding workshops, and cultural communication strategies for working across cultures.  A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Pedro has lived in the U.S. since 1984, when he and wife Lidia came to Texas for graduate studies.  Together, they enjoy traveling, the visual and performing arts, and the good company of friends.
